Today was laundry day, hence my somewhat ridiculous outfit. You forgive me, right?. It took me $5 and three and a half hours, and that's practically a record! I miss doing laundry at home.

Today my friend Brian sent me the link to where Bright Eyes' new album will be streaming until the official release date in February. I just about died. Conor Oberst has been my favorite forever. I'm even wearing a Bright Eyes shirt today. I've had it since I was sixteen. Totally coincidental, I swear. So far, the album is fantastical. Thanks, NPR. I want to jump around the apartment screaming like the semi-absurd fangirl that I am.

Tomorrow I'm planning on a voyage to the local Goodwill, which I'm excited about. That is, if we aren't ridiculously snowed in with the eighteen inches that are expected. Eighteen inches. This is what I get for moving to Western New York, folks. I'm really hoping I can make it out, though. Hopefully I can cure my shopping itch without breaking the bank? The rest of you are going to be doing the 30for30 but I didn't hop on that train soon enough. However, I'm going to make an effort to post every day during the 30for30, in a kind of weird, non-remixing solidarity. Never say I never did nothin' for you. :)

This is a new cardigan. It was on sale sale sale from Urban Outfitters and it's so soft and I only took it off to go to sleep yesterday. The entire time I was wearing that icky skirt during the interview, I kept thinking of coming home to this cardigan. Yum.

Speaking of yum, I think I might be able to convince Boyf to go get Thai or possibly Indian with me tonight. I should really be saving money but who can resist good food? Certainly not me. Also, it's Girl Roomie's last day at the job she hates and we are going to celebrate! Also there is an SVU marathon going on in my living room right now. Also I executed a beautiful parallel park yesterday. Also it's snowing out and I don't have to be driving anywhere, so it's pretty.

Life is good, guys.

PS- Can anyone see Boyf in the background of this picture? Isn't he dreamy?

Herrrrre it is, y'all. I had a couple, more interesting options in mind, but I ultimately went with the old standby because, for a first interview, you can never dress too conservatively. Yes?

I actually hate this skirt. Hate, hate, hate. But it's my one nice big girl skirt, so I'm kind of stuck with it. I picked it up at Target last-minute last year right before my interview for that job I sometimes think I should have taken. I actually wore almost this exact same outfit for that interview. Huh.

Anyway, this skirt was on clearance. There was a size four and a size two. I tried on the four but was almost positive it wouldn't fit me, and it was too big! I am in no way pulling the false modesty thing here, but I'm just not a size four and I'm definitely not a size two. I wouldn't have tried this skirt on, but my friend made me and, lo and behold, it fit!

...Kind of.

It fits really snugly in the hips, which is fine, because I can still sit down. I could deal with that if it was uniformally snug, but it gaps HUGELY at the waist. Huh? Was this skirt made for women who resemble rectangles? I have to wear a belt to hold my top inside the waistband and it always bunches.

As soon as I get money, I am going shopping for work clothes that don't make me complain this much. And also that fit.

The interview went okay! I had to take a whole bunch of computer tests and the girl said they might have a job for me. She'll be getting in touch soon. :) Cross your fingers for me! A new job involves new clothes for you guys to see. Color me excited, y'all.

in which i never look at the camera because boyf is making me laugh too hard

boots- l.l. bean

Post title equals self-explanatory. You try keeping a straight face when your boyfriend is laying on the ground bellowing, "SWEETHEART SHOW ME THE MONEY," in a really terrible faux-Bronx accent. Or faux-Brooklyn. Faux-something.

I got a job interview today! As soon as I am done putting up this post I am going to go hit my wardrobe and come up with interview outfits. Because that is the most important part of an interview, of course.

I wore this around the house today. Boyf and I hung things and then we went to Sweet_ness 7, which is the coolest coffee place I think I might have ever been in my life. Even if the girl at the table next to me was blatantly ignoring the no cellphones rule.

This is the first of what is probably going to be many examples of how Buffalo forces me to wear winter boots all the time. In this outfit, I attempt to make cute tights and a nice dress Buffalo-appropriate by combining them with a hoodie and said boots. The result is questionable, but I felt like documenting it anyway. You live and you learn, yes?

Lexie says these tights make my legs look like Easter eggs. Go read her blog. She has a cute cat named Doom in her posts. I know how much you guys like cute animals.

Tune in tomorrow to see the outfit I wore to my interview! Black boring pencil skirt FTW! Does anyone have any advice on interview outfits? :)

back from the dead

boots- ASOS
tights- urban outfitters
cutoffs- thrifted
top- ASOS
earrings- i got em from my mama

Oh, hi there! Remember me?

No, I didn't die. Buffalo did not, in fact, swallow up my soul for all eternity, though it was cutting it close for a while there. Up until yesterday evening, I did not have internet in my (wonderful! glorious! er...pea green!) apartment and it was like living without air. And also my New Girl Roomie and I had to go to Target and spend obscene amounts of money on home d├ęcor (read: throw pillows), and my car wouldn't start for three days in a row and I thought I needed a new alternator, and I couldn't find my way around and I may or may not have missed home and the pookums and had little pity parties for myself every night.

But I digress. I have internet now! And I'm wearing something cute today, even though it is kind of cheating to post it, because I never actually wore it to go outside. And I applied for eight jobs so far today, so I really needed a brain break. And you guys are the lucky recepients. Lucky you, eh?

Boyf took these pictures for me. Totally different experience to having Mom take them, let me tell you. Boyf likes to climb up on chairs and take surprise photos of me when my back is turned because "candids always come out best!" and be super adorable and sometimes take pictures of my butt. He was also very worried about the number of cables/trash in the background, but I told him that it was okay and that you guys understand because you are used to it by now.

This top is from ASOS. It was kind of expensive, but I still love it. If/when I ever get a Big Girl Job, I imagine that it would go nicely with a pencil skirt. As it is, I wear it with cutoffs and nobody is complaining. Also, are you guys sick of these boots yet? I hope so, cause I'm not. Buffalo is giving them nasty salt stains, so I can't wear them as much as I would like to.

Oh, also, since the pookums is gone now, I tried to find a suitable replacement. So far, Cardboard Taxidermied Deer is the closest I could find.

But tell me...what have you guys been up to while I was gone? I really do want to know :)

pookums says goodbye

I'm not going to lie, one of the things that makes me saddest about moving away from  home is the idea of not being able to see my dog every day.  She's such a spoiled little rat fink, but she always makes me laugh and she's super cuddly.  You have no idea how many times this year, when I was at work and miserable, I remembered that I would be able to see the dog when I came home, and it cheered me right up.  That sounds really corny, I know, but it's true!

Also, I know everyone that reads my blog loves Etta.  Some of them love her more than I think they love my outfit posts and seriously? I can't blame them.  LOOK HOW CUTE SHE IS.  LOOK.

Etta asked me if we could do a photo shoot so she could say goodbye to everyone, so of course I obliged.  Even though I'm wearing a green hoodie and no makeup.  She's so sad that I'm leaving.  She is!  You can see it in her face.

She's really going to miss being in my outfit photos.  That's what she said, anyway.  She's not going to miss being made to wear hats, though.  She doesn't like hats much.  She's more of a purse girl.

Below is a little video I took of the pookums doing what she does best: stretching, yawning, scratching, and settling down for another nap.  It's her way of saying farewell.  And also of tricking me into doing my irritating mushy-dog-person voice, so you can all laugh at me and think that's how I sound in regular speech.  Aw.  Isn't she adorable?

video

PS- The man voice in the background is NPR.  I don't live with someone with a voice as official-sounding as that.  Otherwise, I think I would keep my room a lot cleaner, just out of fear/respect.

practical vs. impractical

Hey everyone!  Enjoying the snow?  I know I am.  I've spent most of the day doing some laundry.  And by "doing laundry," I mean, "constantly repeating the air-fluff-dry cycle on my drier because Mom told me that was the best way to dry my down comforter without damaging it and it's taking hours.  Oh and also, how gross is it that this is the first time I've washed this comforter in two years?"  Yeah.  That's what I mean.

Today I am wearing a teeshirt from my favorite undergrad bar and jeans.  So exciting and classy,  no?  In lieu of what would have been a very boring outfit post, I am going to show you two of my new favorite things on etsy.  If you go and buy that skirt, it might keep me from buying that skirt.  Okay?  I like the way you think.

via Minx

You know you're smitten when you start trying to justify sexy pencil skirts with attached suspenders by saying, "Oh but the suspenders make it totally business-like so of course I could wear this to the office!  By golly, this skirt was meant to be worn in an office!" etc.

I'm not usually into mixed metallics, I don't care what Stacey and Clinton say. Kind of like how I'm not into mixing black and brown.  But who wouldn't mind bending a few rules for these babies?  They're much more affordable than the skirt, too.  Maybe I need to get myself a(nother) HAPPY MOVING DAY/REAL LIFE FTW present?  Yeah?  I think so too.

What are you guys drooling over on etsy lately?  Come on, don't be shy.  I know there's something.  There always is.

bluestocking

shoes- payless
tights- we love colors
shorts- thrifted
tank- h&m
cardigan- urban outfitters
belt- dockers
scarf- delia's

Babby came over to play again today!  She's not feeling too well, but right now she is listening to "Honky Tonk Woman" with wide eyes and isn't crying anymore.  I'll corrupt her yet.

I found these shoes when I was packing.  I never wear heels.  My feet reject them.  However, when I was shopping off some Verizon-related frustration back in college, I couldn't resist them.  I think I wore them to the bar all of one time, and by the end of the night I was in so much pain that I ran home in my socks.  In the snow and ice.  In February.

However, when you are doing some light packing and expecting a huge snowstorm and not a lot of dancing/being irritated by frat boys, these shoes are a lot more accommodating.  I paired them with my royal blue tights from We Love Colors.  True story: When We Love Colors gets the colors right, they can do no wrong.  The quality is awesome and the color is exactly what I wanted.  I bought these tights just so that I could call myself a "bluestocking" smugly while holding my copy of The Great Gatsby and annoying people in a coffee shop.  I am not joking.

(PS- Remember my rants about We Love Colors?  Well, to testify their awesome quality, they left me a blog comment telling me  I could send the tights back and that they were sorry for the inconvenience.  You're awesome, We Love Colors.  I take back everything bad I ever said about you.)

Oh, and here is yesterday's cardigan.  Again.  I told you I was going to be doing a remix.

Also.  I am bad at hair.  And I am sick of the ponytail/messy bun/down rotation I have going on here.  I am one step away from youtube-ing tutorials.  Guys, I am twenty-two.  This is just embarrassing.  Does anyone have hair help for idiots?

PS- MOVING IN THREE DAYS OMFG.

The end.

babby

dress- thrifted

Before anyone asks, no, Babby is not mine.

We here at Joy, Etc. headquarters are officially moving house and home in four (count them, four) days!  Almost all my clothes are securely packed away.  I've made myself a small suitcase of clothes I can wear until then (and probably until after then...who knows when all my unpacking will be finished), so expect some variety of insane mini-remix, because I didn't really plan, I just threw things into a bag.  Perfect.  I still don't have a job, but Boyf, Boyf's Friend, and Boyf's Friend's Girlfriend and I finally found an apartment and I'm moving up on Friday.  Holy excitement, Batman!  I've spent most of this week either packing or procrastinating packing, so today was the first day in a long time that I've gotten dressed for real.  It's also the first time in a long time that I've worn footwear that wasn't either my Minnetonka mocs or my adored lace-up boots.

Today I squared away some final issues at my bank, and tonight I'm dropping by the diner to tie up some loose ends there and also to say goodbye to my friends again.  I wish I could have gone thrifting before I left, but as Mom pointed out, there will be new places to thrift in Buffalo.  Does anyone live there/have friends there/has previously visited there and have recommendations?

Oh, and the third photo is a picture of my mom's job.  I visited her at work today.  Mom babysits for my cousin's baby girl.  For the sake of the dear thing's internet privacy, I am just going to call her Babby. Don't worry, she's not mad; Babby just makes that face all the time.  Today she is wearing a darling pink sweatsuit ensemble.  I told Mom that she's one step away from a Jersey Shore-type show of her very own.  All she needs is for the sweat suit to be made of velour.  Mom told me that she made me many a velour outfit when I was a tot and that I should be careful of insulting other people's sartorial choices.  Even when they are only one year old.  Suddenly, my taste for tacky floral dresses-that-I'm-pretty-sure-are-actually-supposed-to-be-smocks makes sense.  I'm not quite at the level of velour yet, but no one ever said I wasn't tacky.  Thanks, Mom.

PS- Yes, our tree is still up and no, we do not plan on taking it down until about April.  Etta is not worried about it.  She just relishes any opportunity to steal ornaments and lick the glue and sparkles off.

O HAI.

Hi, guys!  Remember me?  I don't want to be that blogger who is always making a million excuses for their disappearance from the blogosphere.  No one wants to listen to a complain-train, right?  So instead, I am going to make a bulleted list of stuff I've been doing away from the computer.  There's a nifty button for it right up there.  Ready?
  • I've had a wicked cold.  Yuck.  I usually never get sick, but last winter I had the flu twice and I swear I was sick more than I was healthy.  Even Boyf's roommates got sick of it after a while.  Let's hope this winter is not a repeat of the same.  However, yesterday I discovered that When You Are Sick And Can't Sleep, Benadryl Will Put You To Sleep Instantly.  Um, yes, call me late to the party, but in my defense my mama always gives me drugs because she is smarter than me and thus I have never made a medical decision in my life.  This is a big accomplishment for me.  So, I got some sleep and I feel way better.  Yay!
  • I went Out with Friends to an Undisclosed Location for the New Year.  I was sick and miserable, but I wore an awesome vintage lace dress and a vintage rabbit-fur coat that I scored for free (yes, really, for free) (it's not a big deal) (really, it's not.  Please don't be jealous.) (!!!) (ZOMG I HAVE A FREE FUR COAT!) and watched my friends bop around being ridiculous.  So that was fun.
  • I quit my job.  So happy.
  • Boyf, Boyf's Friend, Boyf's Friend's Girlfriend and I have an apartment.  As of yesterday.  For wicked awesome cheap, yo.  I now need a job to go with said apartment.  And to pack my stuff.  Not overwhelming at all.
  • I made these.  They look nowhere as awesome and delish as Heidi's.  Actually, they look like someone much less cute than Heidi, like maybe Heidi's dog or something, made them.  But nom nom.
  • Tonight I am being paid to write for the first time ever. (Winning literature prizes in college conveniently do not count.) I'm doing an episode recap of The Biggest Loser for buddytv.com and I'm really excited/omgholynervousness.
Oh hey!  Below are some pictures I stole from Lexie of what I wore on New Year's.  Aren't we so stylish?

myspace pics in the elevator.  so mature.
the remains of my huge burrito.  i did work, son.
shaun conveniently providing my face with some guac at dinner.  what a good guy.
(NOTE: shaun and sean are not the same.  shaun is not boyf.  though he is single and drives a silver volvo.  ladies?)
OH HEY RABBIT FUR COAT THAT WAS FREE.

BBL, party people.
